Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team defeated regionally ranked University of Pennsylvania of the Ivy League 4-3 on Monday, March 4 at Patch Reef Park. The win marked the Owls' third victory of the spring season.
FAU, 3-7, grabbed early momentum in the match by capturing the doubles point. Senior Jose Fantova and sophomore Will Neuner won the last four games to defeat Penn's top doubles tandem 8-5. Then, sophomore Robert Dubuque and freshman Andrei Morin-Kougoucheff broke the service game of Jeremy Court and Vim De Alwis to clinch the point 8-6.
The Owls' strong play continued in singles matches, taking a 3-0 lead with straight-set victories by Neuner and Dubuque. Neuner earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Court in the No. 2 match, while Dubuque dropped only two games to win the No. 6 match by identical 6-1 scores.
Penn, 6-2, got on the scoreboard with a straight-set win on the No. 5 singles court. However, FAU's Fantova secured the match with a hard-fought, three-set triumph at No. 1 singles. He won the opening set 6-2 and won the deciding frame without losing a game.
