BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team split its first day at the Stetson Clarion Classic on Friday.
The Owls (1-1) lost to Wofford (2-2) in four sets (26-24, 26-28, 25-15, 25-15) in their match of the day. FAU lost despite a double-double from Darija Sataric (16 kills, 13 digs) and 21 digs from Cintia Nightingale. Setter Jelena Jovanovic had 42 assists in her first collegiate match.
FAU outblocked the Terriers 8.5-7.0 in the match, with Chandler Hatton chipping in a solo block and two block assists. The first two sets were back and forth affairs down the stretch with each team taking a set before Wofford won the last two sets by matching 25-15 scores.
In their second match, the Owls outlasted Stetson in five sets (22-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-22, 17-15) After splitting the first four sets, FAU had to stave off three Hatter match points to gain the victory. The win was a total team effort with four players tallying double-digit kills, led by a career high 18 from Alessia Pizzocheri. Pizzocheri was also one of three FAU players to register a double-double.
The Owls will wrap up action at the Stetson Clarion Classic on Saturday when they play Hampton and Central Arkansas at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. respectively. Live stats of both matches will be available at www.gohatters.com.
