Baseball Remains Atop Sun Belt Conference Despite Loss at UALR

Little Rock, AR - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team clings to first place in the Sun Belt Conference after dropping a 9-2 decision to the University of Arkansas-Little Rock on Saturday at Gary Hogan Field in Little Rock, Arkansas.
The Owls fall to 28-20 on the season and 16-8 in league action. The team remains tied with Arkansas State University atop the conference standings as the Red Wolves also suffered a setback on Saturday, losing to FIU.
FAU will wrap up the weekend three-game series with a game on Sunday, May 13, at 1 p.m.
The Owls couldn't hold onto an early 1-0 lead established by senior infielder Mike Albaladejo's run-scoring single bring home junior outfielder Nathan Pittman in the third inning.
The lead was short-lived as UALR (26-24, 12-14 Sun Belt) answered in the bottom of the third inning on Cameron Bentley's double.
The Trojans would take a 3-1 lead with a two-run fifth inning. Then, two innings later, Florida Atlantic would cut the deficit to 4-2 when sophomore outfielder Geoff Jimenez hit a sacrifice fly to score junior third baseman Kyle Newton.
The hosts once again had an answer with Blake Johnson's three-run homer in the seventh inning securing the victory.
FAU's Kevin Alexander suffered his first loss of the season, allowing two earned runs in six innings. Offensively, Albaladejo paced the team's six-hit offensive attack with two hits and a RBI. Freshman shortstop Mitch Morales, junior catcher Mike Spano, Pittman and Newton each had one hit.
UALR's Blake Huffman picked up the victory, allowing two runs in six innings. He struck out six batters and improved to 5-3 on the season. Four players had multiple-hit performances, and Johnson had three RBIs in the victory.
