Boca Raton, FL - It was another day and another standout performance for the first-place Florida Atlantic University baseball team. Junior outfielder Dylan Seigel was a perfect 4-for-4 and drove in four runs to pace a 16-hit attack in a 10-7 victory over the University of South Alabama on Saturday at the FAU Baseball Stadium in Boca Raton.
The win means the No. 30-ranked Owls have captured their fourth straight Sun Belt Conference (SBC) series, improved their league record to 10-1 and extended a season-best winning streak to six straight games. The two teams will conclude the weekend series on Sunday, April 8, starting at 1 p.m. FAU will be looking for its third SBC series sweep and second straight weekend with a sweep.
Saturday's 16 hits match a season-high from the series finale against the University of Alabama on February 19. FAU had seven extra-base hits: five doubles, one home run and one triple. All nine players in the lineup collected at least one hit.
The Owls trailed 4-0 before cracking the scoring column with a two-run third inning. Senior infielder Mike Albaladejo brought home sophomore outfielder Geoff Jimenez with the first run on a RBI single to center field. Freshman shortstop Mitch Morales scored on a RBI ground out by junior outfielder Nathan Pittman.
The hosts would tie the game, 4-4, an inning later on back-to-back run-scoring base hits by Jimenez and Morales.
USA regained the lead at 5-4 in the fifth inning before Seigel gave FAU its first lead of the game, 6-5, on his first career home run over the left field fence. He would drove in two more runs in the sixth inning to increase the Owls' lead to 9-5.
The Jaguars (11-20, 6-5 Sun Belt) cut the deficit in half, 9-7, with two runs in the eighth inning and had the game-tying run at first base. However, senior reliever Ahmed Garcia closed down the threat as the left hander induced a fly out by pinch-hitter Colin Bray. Garcia pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season.
FAU's 6-7-8-9 hitters in the lineup went a combined 10-for-15 with six RBIs and five runs scored. Jimenez, the No. 8 hitter, had three hits with two runs scored, while No. 7 junior catcher Mike Spano and No. 3 junior third baseman Kyle Newton also had multiple-hit performances with two hits each.
Freshman left hander Bo Logan picked up the victory in relief after posting three strike outs in 2.2 innings. He improved to 2-2 on the season.
USA's Nick Zaharion, Brad Hook and Brent Mitchell each tallied two hits in an 11-hit offensive attack for the visitors.
