Boca Raton, FL - Singles wins by junior Marlene Ryan and freshman Catalina Ene weren't enough as the Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss to Xavier University on Wednesday at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton. The Owls now stand 6-3 on the season.
Ryan cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles for her sixth spring victory. She is 2-0 at the No. 2 singles matches.
Ene won by identical 6-4, 6-4 scores at No. 6 singles to improve her record to 5-1 on the season.
Xavier rallied to tie the match, and took the victory with a pair of three-set wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.
Senior Cassie Bergeson forced a third set by winning the second-set tiebreaker 10-8 at No. 4 singles. However, she couldn't keep the momentum going and fell 6-1 in the deciding frame.
"Xavier was the better team today and deserved to win the match," said Marcy Hora-Cava, FAU's head women's tennis coach. "They chased down a lot of balls and played the big points very well. We need to learn from this setback and get ready for a busy stretch of matches."
FAU will play three matches in a five-day span, beginning on Friday, March 9, at 1 p.m. against in-state rival Stetson University. The match will be played at Patch Reef Park, 2000 West Yamato Road in Boca Raton.
