Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss to Stetson University on Friday afternoon at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton. The Owls fall to 6-4 on the season.
After losing the doubles point, FAU tried to gain momentum in singles action with first-set victories on three of the six courts. Only two of those matches would hold up in the home loss.
"We fought hard today and our effort on the court was better than in some of the previous matches," said Marcy Hora-Cava, FAU's head women's tennis coach. "Stetson played a tough match and did some things very well. We learned a lot about ourselves on the court today."
Junior Marlene Ryan won a hard-fought, three-set match at No. 2 singles. The Delray Beach native won the opening set 6-2 and then dominated a third-set tiebreaker 10-1. She improved to 7-1 on the season.
The other victory came from freshman Natalia Tomaszewicz, who won in straight sets by identical 6-3, 6-3 scores at No. 6 singles. The Coral Springs native has won five of her six spring singles matches.
"Marlene and Natalia played good matches today and deserved to win against quality opponents," said Hora-Cava.
Fellow freshman Catalina Ene fell in three sets at No. 4 singles. She won the opening set 6-2, but could only manage to win two games the rest of the match.
FAU returns to the court on Tuesday, March 13, at 2 p.m. against the University of Albany at Patch Reef Park, 2000 West Yamato Road in Boca Raton.
