Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team picked up a significant 5-2 victory over 2011 NCAA participant Xavier University on Wednesday at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton. The Owls improved to 8-4 on the spring season.
"The boys were fired up and determined to win a home match," said Brandon Stokes, FAU's head men's tennis coach. "It was awesome to see the guys at the back of the lineup compete against an NCAA tournament team. We must continue to improve within a conference that has four ranked teams."
It took little time for Florida Atlantic to earn the match's only doubles point with back-to-back victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Freshmen Robert Dubuque and Chris Janssen picked up an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles before the freshman duo of Sean Bacha and Boris Bogomolov clinched the point with an 8-6 triumph.
That positive momentum carried over into singles play as FAU won the first set in four of the six matches.
Janssen gave the Owls a 2-1 advantage with a straight-set 6-3, 7-5 win over Mesi Mei at No. 2 singles. The win was his 16th on the season and increased his winning streak to 11 consecutive matches.
Bogomolov earned a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 6 singles, while Dubuque clinched the team victory with a hard-fought, three-set victory at No. 5 singles. Dubuque did not drop a game in the opening set and held off a rally to defeat Xavier's Marc Pretorius 6-3 in the third set.
Albrecht rounded out the winners with a straight-set win at No. 1 singles by identical 6-3, 6-3 scores. The win improved his spring record to 11-1 and 15 singles victories for the 2011-12 season.
FAU returns to the court on Sunday, March 11, at noon with a match against George Washington University from Patch Reef Park, 2000 West Yamato Road in Boca Raton.
