MIAMI, FL - An opening inning home run was all that FIU needed to defeat the Florida Atlantic softball team Wednesday, 2-0.
On a 3-2 pitch in the bottom of the 1st inning, FIU's Kayla Burri launched a home run over the leftfield fence off FAU starter Taylor Fawbush. The Panthers added an unearned run in the 6th.
The Owls were held to two hits, and only had two baserunners reach second base (Sarah Howell after a 1st inning single and sacrifice, and Jordan Stovall after a 2nd inning walk and sacrifice). Heather Barnes had the other FAU hit in the 3rd, a hard-hit single to left.
Fawbush (4-9) took the tough-luck loss, only allowing six hits and one run while striking out five.
The Owls drop to 10-23 and 0-4 in the Sun Belt. Conference play continues this weekend when they host South Alabama for a Saturday doubleheader (6 p.m. and 8 p.m.) and the finale on Sunday, with time TBA (either noon or 1 p.m.).
