Fort Myers, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women's tennis rallied past in-state foe Florida Gulf Coast University 4-3 behind four victories in singles action on Saturday in Fort Myers. The Owls improve to 4-1 on the season.
"The team pulled together with more energy on-and-off each court. This was a positive win for us after losing to FGCU last season," said Marcy Hora-Cava, FAU's head women's tennis coach.
After losing the doubles point, straight-set singles victories by junior Natasha Basma and senior Justine Humair gave FAU a 2-1 advantage. Basma won her match at No. 2 singles in less than one hour by 6-0, 6-2 scores, while Humair was victorious 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
FGCU squared the match at 2-2 after a victory at No. 5 singles. Then, FAU junior Natasha Phillips won by identical 6-3 scores at the No. 6 position to put the team on the verge of clinching the match. The fourth point came a few minutes later when junior Marlene Ryan won a hard-fought, three-set match at No. 3 singles. She rallied after dropping the opening set 7-5, losing only three games in the following two sets.
The Owls return to the court on February 25 when they battle Georgia Southern University at 1 p.m. from Patch Reef Park, 2000 West Yamato Road in Boca Raton.
