Owls Split Day One of Strike Out Cancer Tournament

BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic softball team split its two games on the first day of the Strike Out Cancer tournament.
The Owls (2-10) lost to Auburn 6-1 in their first game of the day. Auburn scored on a sacrifice fly in the first, helped by two FAU errors. The Tigers blew the game open in the second inning, scoring three runs to take a 4-0 lead.
Auburn added to its lead in the fifth inning, with a two run homerun to make the score 6-0. FAU scored its only run of the game on an RBI double by Heather Barnes that drove in Whitley Herb.
Sam Messer pitched a complete game six hitter in the second game of the day, a 3-2 win over Florida A&M. The Rattlers struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning. FAMU could have taken a bigger lead, but Messer was able to regain her composure after the first two batters of the inning reached.
Alison Milam scored to tie the game in the top of the fourth on a Rattler fielding error. A Barnes triple and a Carly Speerin gave the Owls a 3-1 lead in the very next inning. The first two FAMU batters once again reached in the top of the sixth, but once again, the Rattlers couldn't take full advantage and managed to score only once.
FAU will play Tulsa in the final game of the Strike Out Cancer Tournament on Saturday. The game is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. and live stats will be available at www.fausports.com.
