Boca Raton, FL - Winning on eight of the nine courts paved the way for the Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team to pick up a 6-1 win over in-state foe Bethune-Cookman University on Saturday at the South County Regional Park in West Boca Raton. The victory improves the Owls to 2-1 on the season.
"I was happy for the boys. They continue to earn every moment," said Brandon Stokes, FAU's head men's tennis coach. "We have a long way to go but we are hungry and in this journey together. It was a solid day for the Owls and FAU."
The host quickly grabbed momentum of the match by sweeping all three doubles matches, giving the Owls the doubles point. The tandem of junior Taylor Albrecht and freshman Will Neuner picked up an 8-2 triumph at No. 1 doubles. Freshman Robert Dubuque and Sean Bacha won 8-4 at No. 3 doubles to clinch the doubles point.
The team of freshmen Chris Janssen and Boris Bogomolov rounded out the winners with an 8-4 victory at the No. 2 position.
Dubuque put FAU on top 2-0 with a straight-set 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles. The win was his first this spring. Albrecht dropped just two games to earn a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles. Albrecht has won all three singles matches this spring. The two victories came just 19 seconds apart.
Neuner recorded his first spring win of the season with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles to clinch the victory for FAU.
Janssen won in straight sets by identical 6-3 scores at No. 2 singles while Bogomolov rallied to win a third-set tiebreaker 10-6 for a singles win at the No. 6 position. Bogomolov dropped the first set 6-3 but forced the third set with a 6-3 score in the second frame.
"Taylor is leading us right now," said Stokes. "Sweeping all three doubles set the momentum in our favor. We were hungry from the start and used it to our advantage." FAU returns to the court on Friday, February 3, at 2 p.m. when it hosts Georgia Southern University at Patch Reef Park, 2000 West Yamato Road in Boca Raton.
