BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team had their first regular season game tonight. The Owls traveled to Fort Meyers to take on Florida Gulf Coast who is ranked in the Top 25 in three different polls. FAU was able to beat the 14th ranked Eagles 3-1.
It was early in the game when the FAU offense began to take control of the ball and game. Senior and captain Darnell Kingstarted the Owls off with his first goal of the season in the 10th minute of the game.
The two teams went back and forth with taking shots on goal but it was FGCU who was able to put the next point on the board. Although FGCU was able to tie the game up in the 25th minute of the game, the Owls came back even stronger after their opponent scored on them by clinching the win with two more goals.
The remaining goals didn't come until the second half but the Owls didn't waste much time putting the ball in the back of the net. Junior, defender Lukas Simonswas able to put the Owls back ahead of FGCU only three minutes into the second half.
Finally, in the 65th minute of the game King was able to slot another goal past the FGCU keeper for his second goal of the game and the third goal for the team. King's goal put FAU up 3-1 with 25 minutes left in the game where neither team scored.
The Owls had a strong showing their first game with solid defense, including Jeremy Crumpton who played in goal for the Owls and record six saves against FGCU. FAU is now 1-0-0 and will take on Florida International on Sunday, August 28 in Miami at 7:00 p.m.
