Men's Tennis Splits Matches to Begin Sun Belt Shootout

Murfreesboro, Tenn. - The Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team split a pair of matches to being action in the Sun Belt Shootout on Saturday in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The tournament helps establish seeds for next month's Sun Belt Conference Championships.
The Owls, the tournament's No. 2 seed, began the day with a 4-2 triumph over the University of South Alabama before falling 4-2 in a hard-fought match against the University of Denver. FAU stands 10-8 on the season and will battle the University of Memphis in Sunday's third place match.
Against the USA Jaguars, the Owls used strong singles play to rally after dropping the doubles point. Earning victories were senior Marc Abdelnour, at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (5); senior Ervin Garibovic, at No. 2, 6-3, 6-4; freshman Marc Wakim, at No. 6, 6-4, 6-3; and freshman Omar El Kheshen, at No. 5, after his opponent retired after trailing 6-2, 5-2. Wakim and El Kheshen teamed for an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles.
In the second match, Abdelnour was a straight-set winner (6-4, 6-3) over Denver's Enej Bonen, the league's reigning player of the week. Bonen also was ranked No. 55 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles poll.
Junior Derek Madon rounded out FAU's winners against Denver with a come-from-behind triumph at No. 6 singles. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native forced a third set after winning the second set 6-1. Madon went on to win the deciding third set 6-4.
