BOCA RATON, FL - Rose Gressley contributed both in the circle and at the plate on Sunday, helping the Florida Atlantic softball team complete a series sweep of no. 17 Louisiana 6-2.
Gressley got off to a rough start, giving up back to back hits to lead off the game. The Ragin' Cajuns (38-9, 13-5 Sun Belt) eventually scored twice to take a 2-0 lead. FAU (30-22, 15-7) quickly tied things up, as Gressley hit a two-run shot to right field in the bottom of the inning. Controversy ensued in the bottom of the second when the Owls had runners on the corners and two outs. On a double steal attempt, UL shortstop Nerissa Myers was called for obstruction of Hailey Broyles at second, and Carly Speerin scored on the play to give FAU a 3-2 lead. The remainder of the game was played under protest by UL.
Brittany Walker added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth, driving in Ashlyn Parmerter on a sacrifice fly to left, putting the Owls ahead 4-2. Gressley led off the bottom of the sixth with a double to right center and after a popup, Carly Speerin hit her second two-run homerun in less than 24 hours, this one providing the final margin of victory.
After allowing two hits to lead off the game, Gressley did not give up another hit for the remainder of the day, and walked just one batter. The sweep is second of the year in conference for the Owls, who also swept North Texas at home. It is just the second time in their history that UL has been swept in Sun Belt play. FAU is also guaranteed to finish the season with a winning record for the 16th time in 17 years of softball. The Owls have never had a losing season.
FAU will take some time off before traveling to Miami to face rival FIU on May 6 at 6 p.m. Live stats of the game will be available at www.fausports.com.
