Lafayette, La. - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team has lost its first Sun Belt Conference series of the season after suffering a 6-2 setback to the University of Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday in the second game of the weekend series at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Filed in Lafayette, La.
The loss drops the Owls' record to 17-10 on the season and 5-3 in league action. ULL improves to 15-11 overall and ties FAU in the conference standings with a 5-3 mark. The two teams will conclude the series on Sunday, April 3, beginning at 12:35 p.m.
The host Ragin' Cajuns scored five times in the first three innings to grab early momentum in the game and added another run in the fourth. Meanwhile, Florida Atlantic's offense was shut down for the second straight night, leaving 11 runners on base and being limited to just seven hits. The Owls left the bases loaded in the top of the first inning and had runners advancing to third and second bases in the second inning. However, they failed to score in both of those situations.
FAU finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning on senior second baseman Raymond Church's sacrifice fly that scored senior shortstop Nick DelGuidice, who led off the inning with a single to extend his personal hitting streak to 12 games. The team added another run on senior outfielder Andy Mee's run-scoring single that scored Church, who has accounted for all three of the Owls' runs in the series.
Mee and senior third baseman Sean Bukovich each had two hits to lead the Owls' offense in the game.
ULL starting pitcher Joe Zimmerman was effectively wild in picking up his first victory of the season. The right hander allowed one run in 5.1 innings. He walked four batters, two hit FAU hitters and allowed three hits. Reliever Caleb Kellogg recorded his second save by tossing 3.2 quality innings in relief.
FAU starting pitcher Paul Davis suffered his first loss to drop his record to 5-1 on the season. He allowed five runs in three innings. Sophomore reliever Jake Meiers allowed one run in two innings and junior left hander Ahmed Garcia threw three scoreless innings to round out the Owls' relief unit, which allowed just one run in five innings.
Lafayette grabbed early momentum in the game with three runs in the first inning. Alex Fuselier led off the game with a home run over the right field fence, and Tyler Frederick lined a two-run single that scored Greg Fontenot and Mike Petello. In the third, the hosts added two runs on consecutive run-scoring base hits by Lance Marvel and Daniel Nichols. Fontenot added a RBI single to account for the team's lone run in the home half of the fourth inning.
Sophomore R.J. Alvarez, with a 3-1 record and 3.90 earned run average, is slated to be on the mound for Sunday's series finale. A broadcast and details of the game can be found at www.fausports.com.
