BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic softball team lost a doubleheader to South Alabama on Thursday.
The Owls (26-20, 10-5 Sun Belt) fell behind early in game one, as the Jaguars (29-12, 9-7) scored nine runs in the first three innings. FAU's only run of the game came when Cari Curfman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth inning. FAU ultimately lost the game 10-1 in five innings.
The game was a pitchers' duel between Lindsey Croft and Rose Gressley for much of the early going. Taylor Fawbushscored on a wild pitch to give FAU a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two. Heather Barnes broke the game open with a two-run homerun to left center to give the Owls a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning. Gressley pitched five perfect innings before surrendering a leadoff single in the fifth.
FAU still lead 3-0 in the seventh inning when Jenny Stevens led off the inning with a single to left, after Gressley struck out the next batter, Brittany Fowler and Haley Hopkins had back-to-back singles to score USA's first run. Christin Crocker then came to the plate and hit a three run homerun that won the game for the Jaguars.
FAU continues its road trip on Saturday when they face Troy in a doubleheader, starting at 2 p.m. eastern. Live stats of both games will be available at www.fausports.com.
