Boca Raton, Fla. - Senior Virginia Augustin won the deciding No. 4 singles match to give the Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team a 4-3 victory over the University of Maryland-Baltimore County on Saturday afternoon at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton.
The win assures the Owls their first winning season since 2004 as the team stands at 13-10 on the year.
After losing the doubles point, FAU mounted a rally in singles competition by winning four of the six matches -- coming back after losing the opening set in each match.
Augustin was among those Owls' rallying for a victory - and the fourth team point in the match. She held a 5-3 lead before dropping her serve point in the deciding third set. She came back to return the favor to UMBC's Emily Mannix, winning the set and match by a 6-4 score.
Other victorious Owls were sophomore Marlene Ryan, at No. 2 singles; junior Cassie Bergeson, at No. 5 singles; and junior Erika Mrazkova, at No. 6 singles. The victory was Mrazkova's seventh of the season.
FAU will have a lengthy break before returning to the court on April 17 for a match against in-state rival UCF at Patch Reef Park. It will be Senior Day as the program honors Hannah Findlay and Augustin.
