Women's Tennis Sweeps Two Matches in Orlando

Orlando, Fla. - For the second straight Friday, the Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team won a pair of matches in Orlando, defeating Coastal Carolina University, 5-1, and Long Island University, 7-0.
The victories improve the Owls' record to 9-10 on the season - one more than last year's eight-win total. FAU will return to the court on Saturday, March 19, when it hosts Sun Belt Conference opponent University of South Alabama, beginning at 2 p.m.
Florida Atlantic began the day with a strong showing in singles action against Coastal Carolina, winning five of the six matches. Junior Justine Humair earned a straight-set (6-3, 7-5) victory to anchor the lineup. The rest of the team's four wins came in three sets.
Sophomore Marlene Ryan won the deciding third set 6-3 at No. 2 singles in her first match of the day. Fellow sophomore Natasha Basma rallied after losing the opening set to win the third set 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Other winners were junior Cassie Bergeson at No. singles (6-4, 3-6, 6-4) and junior Erika Mrazkova at No. 6 singles (6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-4).
In the nightcap, the Owls earned a dominating victory by winning matches on all seven courts. FAU quickly grabbed momentum in the match by winning the doubles point. The duo of Humair and Ryan earned a 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles, while sophomore Natasha Phillips and Bergeson picked up an 8-6 win at the No. 2 position.
In singles, Humair won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles; Ryan was victorious by identical 6-3 scores at No. 2 singles; senior Virginia Augustin dropped just two points at No. 4 singles; and Phillips was a decisive winner at the No. 6 position.
