BOCA RATON, FL - Rose Gressley went 3-for-5 at the plate and picked a victory in the circle, helping the Florida Atlantic softball team to a doubleheader sweep over Purdue on Monday night.
FAU (13-13) won the first game 4-3. The game was a scoreless tie until the fifth inning when Purdue scored two runs, helped by two Owl errors to take the lead. FAU answered back with a four run bottom of the fifth. Brittany Walker, Heather Barnes and Gressley all had RBIs in the inning, the fourth run scored on Purdue throwing error.
The Boilermakers cut the lead in half in the top of the sixth, and had runners on second and third with two outs, but a ground out to the pitcher killed the potential rally. Purdue had the bases loaded and just one out in the seventh, but a 5-2-6 double play ended the game. Taylor Fawbush pitched a complete game for the win.
In the nightcap, FAU garnered a 1-0 win in a game that featured six defensive errors. A Boilermaker error allowed Heather Barnes to score the game's only run in the fourth inning. Purdue had runners on base in both the sixth and seventh innings, but could not capitialize and the Owls achieved their sweep. Taylor Fawbush pitched two innings in relief of Rose Gressley for her first save of the season.
FAU will travel to Clearwater on Friday to play Rutgers and Oklahoma State as part of the USF-The Game Invitational. The first game starts at 5:30 p.m. Live stats of both games will be available at www.fausports.com.
