Boca Raton, FL - For the second consecutive year the Iron Owl Award come down to the final fall grades. Senior pitcher Ahmed Garcia won the honor after posting the highest fall grade point average.
The Iron Owl Award identifies the strongest Owl baseball player - both mentally and physically - during eight events in the fall offseason workouts.
"Ahmed did a tremendous job this fall competing each and every week to become this year's Iron Owl winner," said John McCormack, FAU's head baseball coach. "I am very proud of Ahmed and how all of the guys competed this fall."
Garcia entered the final event in second place but took the top spot with the 10 bonus points for winning the grade point average event. The Miami native tallied 498 points and edged 2011 winner Alex Hudak by seven points.
Garcia had quite a turnaround from last year when he finished last in the competition. Junior pitcher Mike Sylvestri finished in third place with 481 points. Redshirt sophomore pitcher Kevin Alexander earned a fourth-place finish with 479 points. Alexander had been the leader of the competition until the final few events. Junior infielder Dylan Siegel rounded out the top five with 460 points.
Garcia joins Hudak and two-time winner Lou Morey as Iron Owl recipients.
FAU begins the 2012 season against the University of Alabama on February 17. The home opener is set for February 24 against Manhattan College.
