Boca Raton, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team looks to build off last season's successes with an expanded 2010-11 schedule featuring more Sun Belt Conference matches and competition against some of the state's best teams. The Owls will play 23 matches in a two-month span next spring, including 15 events in Boca Raton.
FAU is coming off a 2010 season in which it posted a two-win improvement, and returns three players that posted double-digit singles victories. Sun Belt Conference matches on next year's schedule feature rival FIU, on January 26; University of Louisiana-Lafayette, on February 27; Troy University, on March 13; and University of South Alabama, on March 19.
"We're playing a few more conference matches this year. Those matches will help us know where we stand before the conference championship (April 21-24 at Mobile, Ala.)," said Marcy Hora-Cava, FAU's head women's tennis coach.
March will be the busiest month on the schedule with 13 matches, including home events against Southern Illinois University, on March 9; the University of Massachusetts, on March 14; and University of Wyoming, on March 16.
"March will be a test with so many matches. However, we hope to get campus and community support to make the home matches fun and exciting for our players," said Hora-Cava.
The fall portion of the schedule will have FAU competing in the Florida International Invitational on October 15-17 in Miami. Then, the spring season begins against the University of Miami on January 21 in Coral Gables. The home opener against Florida Gulf Coast University on February 12 starts a stretch of seven straight matches at Patch Reef Park, located at 2000 Yamato Road in Boca Raton. Other matches against in-state competition will have the team playing Bethune-Cookman University, on February 5; Stetson University, on February 6; Florida A&M University, on February 19; and the UCF, in the final regular-season match on March 17.
Junior Erika Mrazkova led last year's team with a 12-9 record, while junior Cassie Bergeson and sophomore Natasha Basma each tallied 10 singles victories.
