BOCA RATON, FL- Two Florida Atlantic University baseball players have been selected in this year's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Ryan Bernal (23rd round, Milwaukee Breweres) and Mike Gipson (31st round, New York Yankees) heard their names called during this year's draft, but have not yet signed with their respective clubs.
Bernal was the 699th overall pick by the Brewers and had a breakout senior year as a set-up man in the FAU bullpen. The right-hander went 6-3 with a 3.00 ERA and led the Owls with 30 appearances, all out of the bullpen.
Gipson was the 955th overall pick and was the ace of the FAU's starting rotation all season. The right-hander went 8-2 with a 3.70 ERA and recorded 96 strikeouts in 112 innings pitched with a miniscule .234 batting average against.
"I, along with the other members of the program, am happy for Ryan and Mike," said John McCormack, FAU baseball head coach. "They are certainly worthy of being selected in the draft and I wish them the best of luck in their professional careers."
FAU wrapped up its season over the weekend by falling to No. 4 University of Florida in the championship game of the Gainesville Regional. It marked the ninth NCAA regional in school history for FAU and the Owls finished with an overall 37-24 record, their most victories since the 2005 season. F
