Boca Raton, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University men's tennis junior Joshua Scholl won his first tournament championship of the summer in Plantation during the Memorial Day weekend.
"It was great to get a win," said Scholl. "It was my first time back in competition after the college season so it was good to be back on the court."
Scholl captured the Plantation Open Circuit I clay court title with a hard-fought 7-5, 2-6 and 6-3 victory over Luke Mojica of the University of North Carolina in the championship match that lasted two-and-a-half hours on May 31. The FAU player led the third and deciding set 4-3, and after seven consecutive service holds, won four consecutive points to get a key break of serve. He would close out the match with a hold of serve on the next point.
"I had already played a match in the morning and was feeling good physically," noted Scholl about the final match. "I made an effort to get my focus back after dropping the second set. I had some big serves that allowed me to get eight aces. That's a good number for me."
The Pompano Beach native was the tournament's No. 4 seed and was one of two seeded players to reach the quarterfinal round of the event. He defeated William Federhofer of the University of Florida in the semifinals.
"Josh inspires our team - his teammates and his coaches - to be the best we can be every day," said Brandon Stokes, FAU men's tennis coach. "He continues to excel in summer school and in tournaments. It's a positive start for him and now his teammates are called to meet the early standard of success he has set."
Scholl was named to the ESPN the Magazine First Team At Large Academic All-District this season after completing his third year with a 4.0 cumulative grade point average in biology. He also went 13-8 this spring at No. 4 singles for the Owls.
