MOBILE, AL - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team vaulted themselves into first place in the Sun Belt with a 7-2 victory over South Alabama on Friday night at Stanky Field.
"I thought we played very well," said head coach John McCormack. "I'm proud of the guys and it was a very good start to the weekend."
Ryan Garton was the story of the night for the Owls as the right-hander pitched seven strong innings to earn his sixth victory of the season. Garton (6-1) did not allow a base runner until the fifth and gave up five hits and two earned runs with one walk and three strikeouts.
The Owls (30-16, 18-7) got on the board first with a crooked number in the fourth inning. After Raymond Church knocked in a run on a fielder's choice to give FAU a 1-0 lead, Mike Albaladejo was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Andy Mee. The right-fielder delivered with a bases clearing double to put his team on top 4-0.
Anthony Mesa tacked onto the lead in the fifth with an RBI single that scored Sean Bukovich and extended FAU's edge to 5-0.
In the sixth, FAU added on two more runs. The first on a wild pitch by Jake LeBlanc which allowed Mike Albaladejo to score and the second on an RBI single by Nick DelGuidice which plated Dan Scheffler and gave the Owls a commanding 7-0 lead.
Delguidice and Scheffler both finished the game with three hits. Mee's double in the fourth extended his hitting streak to 14 games, tied for the team lead with Raymond Church.
The Jaguars (28-19, 15-7) finally got on the board in the seventh with an RBI double by Sean Laird that scored Brent Tanner and made the score 7-1.
Ryan Bernal came in to relieve Garton in the eighth after the starter gave up a hit and a walk to start the inning. Bernal was a bit shaky with his command but got out of any major damage in the eighth by giving up just one run and wiggling out of a bases loaded and nobody situation.
The reliever stayed on for the ninth and finished off the victory for FAU. Bernal has not given up an earned run in his last seven appearances.
The Owls and Jaguars will continue the series on Saturday with game two. RHP Mike Gipson (7-1, 2.90) gets the start for FAU. South Alabama's starter is still too be determined. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. eastern and the game can be heard live on www.fausports.com.
