Special to FAU from FAUOwlAccess.com - When junior Rose Gressley is playing first base she is relaxed and approachable while she is warming up for a game.
When it's her turn to pitch, it's a different story.
That's when Gressley turns on the intensity in an effort to get fired up for the game "I just get in the mindset that no batter can get a hit off me," Gressley said. "I work myself up to try and get mad. There's a lot of pressure when you are pitching and I just try to use it to my advantage. I feed off of it."
When Gressley is pitching not only do her teammates know to stay away, but even coach Joan Joyce keeps her distance.
"She has changed her routine to the point that I don't even talk to her," Joyce said. "She is so intense and so focused on what she is doing, I just stay away and watch."
Gressley says she is a better pitcher when she can get psyched-up before a game. "When I get madder I throw harder, so batters don't really want to make me mad," Gressley said, Gressley's intensity has helped her to a 6-6 mark with a 2.40 ERA this season. Gressley has started 11 games and finished eight of them.
Gressley, a native of Virginia, has been contributing to the Owls since she was thrust into the rotation as a freshman. That season she was 16-7 with a team-leading 2.34 ERA.
"My freshman season was a whole different experience," Gressley said. "I think that's when I learned you can't be afraid of any batter. You just have to be confident and go after them."
And Gressley hopes to keep getting better as the Owls, who have won five-consecutive games, prepares for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
"I think we have really stepped it up lately and played well," Gressley said. "That proves we can do it."
FAU concludes its regular season this weekend with a home game at 6 p.m. Friday vs. FIU before playing the Golden Panthers at 6 p.m. Saturday in Miami.
