With a veteran and experienced lineup, the Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team looks to make another run at a Sun Belt Conference championship at this weekend's tournament, starting on Thursday, April 22 in New Orleans. The Owls lost in the finals of last year's championships.
FAU, the tournament's No. 3 seed, had a 12-8 regular season record and finished fourth in last month's Sun Belt Shootout. The team is coming off a 7-0 victory over Bethune Cookman University on April 10.
Leading this year's team has been junior Marc Abdelnour with a 12-5 record at No. 1 singles. The Aleppo, Syria native has won 23 matches in singles and doubles play this spring. Senior Lawrence Harradine, with a 13-8 record, is one of five Owls to win 12 or more matches. He has posted a 9-6 mark at No. 2 singles. Freshmen Georg Matschke and Matthew Braunworth have also recorded 13 victories, while junior Joshua Scholl rounds out a balanced singles attack.
The Owls will face No. 6-seed University of New Orleans in the first-round match, starting at 12:30 p.m. The tournament is scheduled to continue through the championship match on Saturday, April 24. The champion receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I tournament.
Florida Atlantic will be looking for its first post season tournament appearance since 2001 when it won the Atlantic Sun Conference championship.
