Winning five of the six singles matches, the Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team posted its second straight dual match victory, 5-2, over the University at Buffalo 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton. The win improved the Owls' record to 5-3 on the season.
Buffalo entered the match ranked 10th in the northeast region of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll and stands 3-3 on the season.
FAU's depth of play in singles was readily apparent, winning three of the singles matches in three sets. The team also came out victorious in the top three singles matches.
"Fortunately for us, our singles have been consistently improving and we continue to demonstrate our toughness," said Men's Tennis Head Coach Brandon Stokes. "Regardless of our level of play, we compete at the highest level."
Senior Lawrence Harradine clinched the victory for the Owls with a come-from-behind, three-set victory at No. 1 singles. The Barcelona, Spain native dropped the opening set 6-4 only to rally and knock off Wojciech Starakiewicz, the northeast region's third-ranked player. Harradine won the deciding third set by a 6-3 score.
Ervin Garibovic also earned a hard fought, three-set victory at No. 2 singles. The victory increased his winning streak to four matches and marked his first triumph at No. 2 singles.
Junior Joshua Scholl improved his record to 5-3 on the season with a straight-set 7-6 (7), 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles. He would also team with sophomore Derek Madon to win in doubles 8-4.
Two freshmen rounded out the Owls' singles victories. Matthew Braunworth rallied after dropping the opening set to post a three-set win at No. 5 singles, capturing the deciding third frame by a 6-2 score. Georg Matschke cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the No. 6 singles.
FAU continues the 11-match home stand on Tuesday, March 9 against Kennesaw State University. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
