The Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team got back to its winning ways on Sunday, defeating the University of North Dakota in a 7-0 match at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton.
The Owls snapped a two-match losing skid to improve to 6-8 on the season. The win is just the second time that FAU has shut out an opponent this spring. North Dakota falls to 4-8 on the season.
"It was a good win for the girls," said Women's Tennis Head Coach Marcy Hora-Cava. "In singles, we were able to seize control of the match and played well to pick up the victory."
FAU made quick work in singles by dropping a combined eight games on the afternoon. Sophomore Justine Humair cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory to anchor the lineup at No. 1 singles. Senior Natalia Totevska also won without dropping a game at No. 2 singles to improve her record to 7-10 on the season.
Freshman Natasha Basma continued the strong play by winning 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. She has won five of her last six singles matches.
Also victorious were sophomore Cassie Bergeson, who got back in the win column with an impressive 6-0, 6-3 triumph at No. 4 singles; sophomore Erika Mrazkova, who dropped only two games in picking up a win in the fifth singles; and freshman Natasha Phillips, a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 6 singles - her collegiate debut.
"(Natasha) Phillips is one of the most improved players on the team," Hora-Cava said. "Today was a big stepping stone for her and she got a positive result."
FAU returns to the court on Tuesday, March 16 against New Jersey Institute of Technology, starting at 2 p.m., from Patch Reef Park.
