Boca Raton, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team will take its postseason aspirations west this weekend for a pair of Sun Belt Conference matches against nationally ranked University of Denver on Friday, October 15 and regionally ranked University of North Texas on Sunday, October 17.
The Owls have a 3-3 record at the midway point of the league season and are in a logjam with three other teams competing for one of the eight spots to qualify for the championship tournament. Overall, the team has a 4-9 overall mark after winning four of its last seven matches, but is still seeking its first road victory.
FAU's strong second-half streak has been led by freshman forward Jesse Shugg, who has scored six goals; sophomore forward Allison Griffin, who has scored four goals in conference play; freshman forward Alexandra Major, who has added three goals this fall and the game-winner in the 1-0 victory over Middle Tennessee State University on October 8; and freshman forward Marisa Russo, who leads the team with five assists. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Courtney Zwetsch has been in goal for all four of FAU's wins and has posted three shutouts.
Friday's opponent, Denver, is ranked 21st in this week's Soccer America Top 25 poll, has a 12-2 record, has won seven straight matches and is the Sun Belt Conference's lone undefeated team (6-0). One of the two losses came against ranked UCLA, 4-2, on September 17. The Pioneers have allowed just two goals in the seven matches since that setback. Leading players are Kaitlin Bast, who has scored nine goals; Kristen Hamilton, with six goals and six assists; Nicholette DiGiacomo, who has nine assists; and goalkeeper Lara Campbell, who has a 0.89 goals against average and four shutouts.
Denver will be the second nationally ranked opponent that FAU has faced this season. The Owls dropped a 3-0 decision on the road to No. 7-ranked University of Florida on August 27.
Meanwhile, North Texas enters the weekend ranked seventh in the south region with a 9-5-1 record after posting four straight league victories. Julie Lackey leads the Mean Green with eight goals while Ellen Scarfone has added seven assists. The Owls have never defeated North Texas and lost 2-0 last year.
FAU split a pair of Sun Belt Conference matches last weekend in Boca Raton, beating Middle Tennessee State University before falling to Western Kentucky University in two 1-0 matches.
