Boca Raton, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team was on the wrong end of a 1-0 decision to the visiting Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers on Sunday afternoon at the FAU Soccer Stadium in Boca Raton.
The Owls had picked up two victories at home in Sun Belt Conference play by 1-0 scores, including a victory on Friday over Middle Tennessee State University. Western Kentucky broke a scoreless match in the 37th minute when Katrina Ott scored her first goal on the season after a corner kick from Lindsay Williams. Ott was able to finish within traffic in front of the 8-yard penalty box.
"We got off to a slow start but Western Kentucky to their credit was able to take advantage of some opportunities to get the lead," said Brian Dooley, FAU's women's soccer head coach.
Despite being outshot 20-6 in the match the Owls were able to get some scoring opportunities. In the second half, sophomore Breanna Lewis played a header that was just wide of the left post. The scoring opportunity was set up by a long ball from freshman Allyson Buerosse. Earlier, freshman Marisa Russo drew the Hilltoppers' goalkeeper Libby Stout away from the goal late in the first half but Russo's shot was blocked by a defender.
Freshman Alexandra Major paced the offensive attack with two shots. Sophomore Allison Griffin, Buerosse, Lewis and Russo each had one shot.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Courtney Zwetsch made a career-high nine saves in the match. The Lutz, Fla. native has allowed one goal in four home Sun Belt Conference matches.
Prior to the match the FAU women's soccer program honored seniors Janelle Blake, Laura Hyvonen, Sonia Richards and Anhnhi Tran during Parent's Weekend.
FAU stands 3-3 in Sun Belt Conference play at the midway point of the league season. Overall the team stands 4-9 on the fall campaign. The Owls will travel out west to battle nationally-ranked University of Denver on Friday, October 15 and the University of North Texas on Sunday, October 17. Kickoff against the Pioneers is set for 7 p.m. eastern time. Western Kentucky improves to 6-5-2 on the season and 4-2 in league matches.
