BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team hit a season-high 15 three-pointers in defeating rival FIU 106-88 on Saturday night.
Playing in front of a sellout crowd, the Owls (12-10, 8-3 Sun Belt) closed the first half on a 26-13 run to take a 52-36 lead in the break. Sanchez Hughley and Shavar Richardson led the Owls with 14 points apiece. A 15-3 Owl run early in the second half put FAU ahead 72-48 with 14:39 remaining in the game.
The Golden Panthers put on a rally of their own, cutting the lead to nine with just under eight minutes remaining in the game. FAU scored 11 unanswered points, including two threes by Richardson, to stretch their advantage back to 20 and seal the victory.
Greg Gantt hit five three pointers in the game to set a new freshman record for three pointers in a season and had a team high 25 points. Sophomore guard Alex Tucker set an FAU record for assists in a game with 16 and Sanchez Hughley tied his career high with 19. Richardson ended the night with a season-high 22 points.
