Consistent play paved the way for the Florida Atlantic University women's golf team in capturing the season-opening Eagles Golf Invitational title in the 54-hole event at Miromar Lakes Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday.
The Owls entered the final round in third place but just four shots off the pace set by leader Bethune-Cookman College. FAU carded a 312 team score on the 6,036-yard par 72 layout near Fort Myers to edge three other NCAA Division I teams for the title.
"As the scores started to come in I thought that we had a good chance to win the tournament," said Joan Joyce, head women's golf coach.
The tournament title marks FAU's first team's championship since October of 2007 when it won the Xavier Invitational.
FAU posted a 941 team score to edge the host school, Florida Gulf Coast University, by three strokes. Jacksonville University finished in third place with a 948 and Bethune-Cookman rounding out the field with a 972 score.
Individually, Jennifer Norton anchored the scoring finishing in a third place tie with a 233 composite score that included a three-over-par 75 in the final round. She also shot a one-over-par 73 in the tournament's second round.
Gina Larsen finished in a tie for fifth place with a 236, Marilyne Cadieux carded three rounds of 79 to finish in seventh place with a 237 and Anna Wiklund shot a 243 to place 12th in the event. Elisabetta Bertini rounded out the scores for FAU with a 245.
"We had a lot of energy today and played really well on a challenging course," said Joyce. "We were tougher than the rest of the teams, fighting through some tough playing conditions...and this is a really good showing for our first time out."
FAU will return to action on Oct. 5 in University of South Florida's two-day Waterlefe Invitational in Bradenton.
