BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University rallied to win its biggest game of the year, needing five hours and 12 innings to knock off its rival FIU 10-9 and stay alive in the race for a spot in the upcoming Sun Belt Conference postseason tournament.
With their backs firmly against the wall, trailing 8-7 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Troy Bubley hit a full-count pitch from Eric Berkowitz (2-2) in the right-field gap, scoring Tyler Herrig to send the game into extra innings.
David Wilson - who had his first career four-hit game - singled off Berkowitz to lead off the 12th and Tom Hatcher won the game for the Owls with a walk-off double.
"I told the guys our work is not done," said first-year FAU head coach John McCormack after the win. "We have to be ready to play tomorrow. We can not afford any lapses in our preparation or focus."
Florida Atlantic (29-23; 12-16 Sun Belt) will be focusing on completing the three-game sweep of FIU. A win assures the Owls of a playoff spot. A loss would mean FAU would need a New Orleans loss to ULL and an Arkansas State loss to UALR to make the eight-team field.
Glen Troyanowski (4-3) facilitated the comeback, striking out nine of the 13 batters he faced in four-plus innings of scoreless baseball from innings 8-12. Six were of the swinging variety and three batters were punched-out looking.
"When the game is on the line I feel the adrenalin and feed off that," said Troyanowski, who baffled FIU to the point where only nine of his 57 pitches drew contact from Golden Panther bats. "That was the best I have ever pitched here."
FIU (33-21; 17-12 Sun Belt) - assured of at least a No. 4 seed in the upcoming tournament - rallied from a 5-1 deficit and used an FAU error to go up 8-7 in the eighth.
Tyler Townsend and Raiko Alfonso each hit three-run homers during a seven-run FIU fifth inning which forced FAU starter Ahmed Garcia from the game. The inning transformed a four-run FAU lead into an 8-5 deficit.
William Block and Jeremy Griffiths responded with homers of their own in the bottom of the fifth to even the game back up at 8-8.
Still tied with one out in the eighth, Tim Jobe hit what appeared to be a tailor-made double play groundball up the middle, only to see it roll through the legs of Nick DelGuidice and into the outfield. Steve Stropp moved to third on the play and ran home from third moments later when the Owls threw out Jobe who tried to steal second.
It appeared the run was going to make a winner out of Jorge Marban - one of five FIU relievers used after lefty starter Corey Palizzano was lifted after just three innings. But Bubley saved the Owls with a pinch-hit, two-out double in the bottom of the ninth which scored Herrig, who had came on to pinch run for DelGuidice from second who had drawn a one-out walk.
GAME NOTES: William Block's solo homer off Ty Main in the fifth pulled him within one of FAU's all-time homerun record of 47 established by Mike Ryan (1982-84)... David Wilson stole his 10th base to tie Colby Gratton for the team lead... Every Golden Panther starter had at least one hit... 8 of 9 FAU starters did as well... The Owls will start freshman lefty Brent Adheen (0-4; 6.91 ERA) in Game Three; FIU counters with Daniel DeSimone (4-4; 5.75 ERA).
