BOCA RATON, FL The Florida Atlantic University men's golf team used the 2009 season to establish excitement around the program that hadn't been felt in a while. On the golf course, the Owl's improved their national ranking from the initial pre-season ranking of 240 to its' current ranking of No. 126, an improvement of 114 spots. Additionally, FAU lowered their team average by over 15 strokes-per-round. The Owl's gained national recognition from several publications as one of the most improved teams.
Also generating enthusiasm was the inaugural FAU Spring Break Championship. Teams from the Big 10, Big 12, Sun Belt, Conference-USA, Mid-American and the Big East conferences traveled to Gleneagles Country Club in Delray Beach to compete. The University of Illinois swept the team and low-individual titles, but FAU showed they could compete against a nationally-ranked field.
FAU would have their own sweep, taking the team and medalist honors at the Treasure Coast Classic in Fort Pierce. The victory marked the first major tournament win under second year Head Coach Angelo Sands. The Owls also won all three dual meets competed in during the spring semester (Niagara University, Rutgers University, University of Dayton).Kelly McHugh the "Sun Belt Golfer of the Month" for March, as he won two duals meets and finished runner up at several tournaments.
The Sun-Belt Conference Tournament brought FAU to the Cypresswood Golf Course in Houston, TX. Though the Owls entered the tournament ranked sixth based upon the team's strokes-per-round average, FAU did not fair as well as liked. The 12th place finish was disappointing, but will not smear the accomplishments of the 2009 season.
The future looks bright for FAU, returning all players except senior Will Cottle.
