Final Stats | GAME ONE: FAU 9, Bryant 5
BOCA RATON, FL - Jeremy Griffiths hit a three-run homer in the first inning and freshman starter Ahmed Garcia made the early lead stand up as the Owls of Florida Atlantic University tacked on some late runs to post a 13-5 win over Bryant University. FAU sweeps the Saturday afternoon non-conference doubleheader in Boca Raton.
Florida Atlantic (21-16) has won four straight, which includes three wins over Bryant in the past two days. Griffiths went 3-for-4 and five other FAU players hit doubles, including William Block who is now FAU's all-time leader in two-baggers (52). Five different Owls had two or more hits in Game Two and as a team FAU hit three homers and seven doubles in the doubleheader sweep.
Bryant (26-13) had cut a four-run FAU lead to 7-5 in the late innings on one of Pat McKenna's two doubles. The upstart Bulldogs are in the midst of an impressive season as a first-year DI program.
FAU scored in each of the first three innings. Griffiths hit a three-run drive over the fence in the right-field corner in the first and singled and scored on a Nick DelGuidice single in the third. The early 5-1 lead was enough for Garcia (2-0). The freshman from Miami allowed just four hits through 6 1/3 innings and was credited with the win in his first collegiate start.
Doubles by Mike Albaladejo and David Wilson generated FAU's seventh run in the bottom of the sixth. Wilson's extra-base hit, his 14th of the year, chased Bryant starter John Michael Ryan (3-3) and plated Albaladejo, extending the FAU lead to 7-3.
With Garcia gone in the seventh Bryant pushed in two runs to tighten things up 7-5. McKenna scored the first of Bryant's two runs in the seventh. McKenna finished Game Two 3-for-5.
Wilson led off the FAU eighth with a single and Block followed with a double down the left-field line. Block's double was the 52nd of his four-year FAU career - a new school record. Before Block's double and the six late runs scored by the Owls, FAU right-hander Glen Troyanowski had done an outstanding job in relief to quiet any hopes of a Bulldogs rally.
Troyanowski worked the final 2 1/3 and was credited with his team-leading third save.
The two teams will wrap up the four-game weekend series Sunday. Game Four is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at FAU Stadium, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.
