BOCA RATON, FL - David Wilson homered during a five-run fifth inning for Florida Atlantic University, allowing the Owls to shake off its six-game losing streak with an 11-5 win over Bethune-Cookman University on Wednesday.
Florida Atlantic (18-16) continues to play well on its home field in Boca Raton, improving to 15-7 at FAU Stadium. Wilson was 2-for-2 and drove in three runs. Travis Ozga also homered and finished the day 4-for-5. Ozga's solo homerun, his fourth, came in the seventh, an inning in which the Owls tacked on five runs to seal it.
Bethune-Cookman (18-19) has won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in each of the past three seasons and is off to an 8-1 start in league play thus far in 2009. The Wildcats posted a sweep over MEAC rival Norfolk State University last weekend.
The Owls and Wildcats play again next Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Bethune-Cookman's Jackie Robinson Park in Daytona Beach.
FAU freshman right-hander Hugh Adams threw 4 2/3 innings of hit-free baseball in his first collegiate start. With FAU leading 1-0 in the fifth Adams was one out away from finishing the inning and possibly qualifying for the win but his five walks and three hit batters would eventually catch up to him and end of his afternoon when a fielding error resulted in a two-out run for the Wildcats which tied the game 1-1.
Ahmed Garcia got Adams out of the inning and the FAU offense backed him with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to put FAU comfortably in front 6-1. Sean Bukovich and Nick DelGuidice both doubled in the inning and Wilson added a two-run homer, his fifth.
The Wildcats' first hit came on Justin Hoyt's bunt single to lead off the sixth. BCU's top hitter C.J. Lauriello hit an RBI double later in the inning and would race home on an Owls' fielding error - part of a three-run frame against Garcia which put BCU back into the game, 6-4.
Ozga gave the Owls' pen some insurance with an opposite-field drive over the leftfield fence to lead off the seventh. William Block added a two-RBI single later in the inning. Block finished the afternoon 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Ryan Bernal pitched the seventh and Glen Troyanowski the eighth and ninth.
Florida Atlantic returns to action at home against Bryant University Friday night. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. FAU and Bryant will play four games in three days this weekend.
GAME NOTES: The game started at 5:10 p.m.; delayed 1 hour and 10 minutes due to afternoon rain showers... The Owls' winless stretch had been its longest since 1998... William Block led off the fourth inning with his team-leading 11th double; he is one away from tying FAU's all-time record of 51 doubles set by Rusty Brown (2001-04)... The Owls hit four doubles as a team.
