JONESBORO, AR - The Florida Atlantic University track team finished third at the Sun Belt Indoor Track and Field Championships. It is the highest finish for the team since joining the Sun Belt Conference.
FAU was in fifth place after the first day climbed two spots based on a strong performance by the entire squad in spite of being somewhat shorthanded, who scored 68 points on the second day of the meet. The Owls finished just seven points behind second place Middle Tennessee State. Friederike Feil scored 14 points with a third place finish in the mile and a second place finish in the 5,000 meters. Feil's time of 17:15.03 in the 5,000 meters is a school record, improving the mark by more than 30 seconds.
"Iki ran really well, especially since she she did not run competitively in the fall," said head coach Alex Smolka.
In the 55 meter dash, Tiffany Williams a freshman who did not join the squad until January, finished second in 7.15 seconds. Patricia Gumbs, Charlene Luxama and Toni Jackson finished third, fourth and seventh place respectively in the 800 meters. Trishauna Clarke and Jessica Smith finished fourth and fifth place in the 200 meters to provide the Owls with even more points in the standings.
"For a team that is so young and shorthanded to perform so well, it shows you how far the program has come," said Owen McGregor, assistant coach for sprints. "I feel we can really challenge for the outdoor title."
The Owls improved two spots from last season's meet. The team will now move outdoors, starting with the FAU Twilight Invitational on March 14
