Florida Atlantic University was led by the outside attack of Brittany Bowe as she scored 17 points and Jessica Knurick who added 15 points in a 66-58 win over Denver at FAU Arena on Wednesday. The victory snaps a two-game losing skid for the Owls and gets them back to the .500 mark in the Sun Belt Conference.
The Owls were helped by a fast early start. Tied at 10 four minutes in, FAU got out on an 11-2 run thanks to two jumpers by Andrea Taylor and two baskets by Bowe. Her jumper gave the Owls a 21-12 lead. FAU would push the lead into double-digits by forcing 13 Denver turnovers. Breana Turner's lay-up late in the half gave FAU a 34-22 advantage going into the locker room.
FAU would maintain the lead early, pushing it as high as 15 points after Taylor hit another three-pointer. But the Pioneers would charge, and eventually cut the lead to four points on a Kaetlyn Murdoch lay-up midway through the half. The Pioneers would cut the lead to four multiple times, the latest with under a minute to go in the game. However, their last chance to slice the lead further ended when Andie Mason missed a three-pointer and Brittany Bowe got fouled on the rebound. Bowe would make two free-throws then get a lay-up late to secure the win.
"I was very pleased with the way our kids played tonight," said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. "We showed great defensive effort and the kids played their tails off and if we can get that every night, we'll be in good shape."
FAU (10-13, 7-7 Sun Belt) shot 53 percent (26-49) for the game and were led by Bowe's 17 points and Knurick's 15. Carla Stubbs came off the bench to score 11 points as the Owls only committed 11 turnovers and made five-of-eight shots from beyond the arc.
Denver (12-12, 7-6 SBC) was led by Britteni Rice with 13 points. Ashly Robinson, Murdoch and Mason scored 11 points apiece. The Pioneers out rebounded FAU 31-26 but also committed 22 turnovers.
FAU will go on the road to face South Alabama on Saturday, February 14 at 2 p.m. Live audio can be streamed via www.fausports.com.
