Florida Atlantic University couldn't overcome the hot start by Middle Tennessee, as they shot 23 of 40 from the field in the first half and knocked down 11 three-pointers as the Blue Raiders defeated FAU 90-64 in Murfreesboro on Wednesday.
The Owls got the first bucket of the game on a basket by Andrea Taylor thirty seconds in. After that, the Blue Raiders went on a 17-3 run. Two three's by Jackie Pickel and a trey by Anne Marie Lanning put MTSU up 17-5. Another Lanning three put the Blue Raiders up by 22, they would extend the lead to 57-29 at halftime.
Middle Tennessee would stretch the lead to 35 points before FAU would cut into the deficit in the second half. Breana Turner scored 18 of her career-high 26 points in the second half as the Owls outscored Middle Tennessee 35-33.
"We just didn't have any legs in the second half," said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. "But Middle Tennessee is a very talented team that's tough to stop when they hit their three's."
Alysha Clark led all scorers for Middle Tennessee (12-4, 4-0 SBC) with 28 points. Emily Queen and Brandi Brown each had a double-double. Queen scored 20 points and had ten rebounds, Brown added 13 points and ten rebounds. The Blue Raiders made 48 percent of their shots from the field (34-71) on the ballgame and out rebounded the Owls 48-27.
FAU (4-10, 1-3 SBC) shot 42 percent (24-56) from the field and were led by Turner's 26 points. Taylor added ten points as she connected on two three-pointers. FAU got to the foul line often, connecting on 13 of 18 free-throws.
