Jacksonville, FL- Florida Atlantic University won their first match of the season 5-1 against Jacksonville University. Senior Shire Standnes knocked three goals in the net during the second half to solidify an Owl's win.
Freshman Darnell King started the scoring with a header off a corner kick from freshman Rocco Pecora. JU followed with a score off a corner kick, but senior Liam Ogle answered by tapping a ball from Pecora and King into the net for a score and FAU entered the half with a 2-1 lead.
FAU was able to control the second half as Standnes took advantage of assists from sophomore Andre McCreath and freshman Calvin Crooks. Standnes also scored on a breakaway, which gave the four-year starter a hat trick (three goals).
With only one more total shot than JU, head coach Kos Donev felt that FAU was able to capitalize on the opportunities given. "We put things together. We played not only good as a team, but had a good intensity level. On top of all that we were able to capitalize on all of our chances. It was a good all around team effort."
Junior goalkeeper Phillip Lamarre was credited with his first win of the season and handed duties over to sophomore goalkeeper Matt Cosinuke in the final minutes of the game. It was the first time that Lamarre was not present in goal this season. Lamarre had five saves. The Owls hold a 1-3-0 season record.
FAU will travel Friday, September 12th to Stetson University for their next match and return for a home match-up against Seattle University on Saturday, September 13 at 7:00 p.m. The Seattle match is one of only three home matches remaining.
