KANSAS CITY, MO - The Florida Atlantic volleyball team split its two matches on Day 2 of the Kangaroo Klassic. Morgan Johns set a career-high with 21 kills as FAU defeated UMKC three sets to one in its first match.
The Owls (4-2) lost the first set 25-20 after pulling with 22-20 late in the set. FAU trailed 4-2 in the second set, before taking the next 11 points on their way to a 25-12 win. Johns has five kills in that set.
FAU led the third set 15-8 when the Kangaroos came back to tie the set at 19. The teams traded points and were tied at 22 when a Johns kill and two UMKC attack errors. The Owls led set four 17-13 when UMKC again rallied to tie the match and once again traded points. In a 24-24 tie, a UMKC attack error and a Casey LaRocca service ace ended the match.
The Owls fell to Samford in straight sets in their second match of the day. FAU trailed 15-10 in the first set, but pulled to within one at 19-18. The Bulldogs took the next four points on their way to a 25-20 set one win.
FAU trailed 15-9 in the second set and managed to tie the match at 19 before Samford sealed the set with a 5-1 closing run. Another 5-1 Bulldog run, this time coming with Samford leading 9-8 proved to be the difference in the third set as the Bulldogs clinched the match with a 25-16 set three win.
Krystena Castro tied for the match-high with 11 kills. Castro and Johns were named to the All-Tournament Team. The Owls return to action on Friday when they face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Air Force as part of the Air Force Invitational in Colorado Springs, CO.
