COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team won both of its matches on Day One of the Air Force Invitational.
Krystena Castro had a career high 23 kills in the team's five-set win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in its first win of the night. The Owls dropped the first two sets 23-25 and 20-25 before rallying to take sets three and four 25-9 and 25-17, respectively. FAU got out to a 9-2 lead in the fifth and final set before the Islanders rallied and had match point at 13-14 before the Owls scored three straight points to take the set and the match 16-14.
FAU defeated Air Force three sets to two in its second match of the evening. The Owls used a 21-5 run, including the final eight points in a row to win set one 25-9. The Falcons won set two 25-20 despite four kills and two blocks from both Anne Vaughan and Katie Arvidson. Set three was tied at 18 when the Owls went on a 7-4 run to win the set. Air Force won the fourth set 25-15 and got out to an early 2-0 lead in the fifth set, when FAU rallied to take a 6-3 lead of their own. FAU never surrendered the lead and took their second five-set match of the day winning the set 15-12. Vaughan had 12 kills in the match.
It was the sixth win of the season for the Owls, matching last season's total. Action continues tomorrow in the Air Force Invitational when FAU takes on North Carolina Central and Kent State.
