CONWAY, SC - The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team lost its season-opening match at Coastal Carolina 1-0. Despite having almost identical shot and save totals, the Chanticleers were able to bounce a header past Owl goalkeeper Phillip Lamarre in the 43rd minute.
FAU attempted to tie the score with several last minute surges but weren't able to put one of their seven second half shots in the goal. The Owl defense held Coastal Carolina to just one shot over the final 45 minutes.
"I think we started the game flat and they took advantage of it," said FAU head coach Kos Donev of the first half. "We dominated defensively the second half and attacked well offensively."
Stan Castaldo, Trevor Pluskota, Liam Ogle, Darnell King, and Shire Standnes all registered shots on goal. Lamarre was credited with five saves.
FAU continues play in the Coastal Carolina Tournament tomorrow against Niagara University at 3:00 p.m. in Conway, SC.
FAU's home opener is next Friday, September 5 against the University of Missouri-Kansas City. To purchase tickets, visit the FAU Ticket Office, Tom Oxley Center, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.
