TROY, AL - The Florida Atlantic softball team fell to North Texas 4-3 on Thursday, ending FAU's hopes of repeating as Sun Belt Tournament Champions.
The game was scoreless in the bottom of the fifth inning when NT scored three runs on three hits and an error to take a 3-0 lead. FAU was down to its last out in the top of the seventh when Jessica Myers and Melissa Moore reached on back-to-back walks, following by a Rose Gressley base hit that loaded the bases. A Mean Green pitching change failed to change the momentum as a wild pitch allowed all the runners to move up and cut NT's lead to 3-1.
After an Amber Barton walk, Lauren Crandall drove in both Moore and Ambar Jones, who was pinch running for Gressley to tie the game. The Owls were unable to take the lead and the inning ended with the bases loaded. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Mallory Cantler hit a solo homerun just over the top of the left field fence to give NT a 4-3 win and end FAU's tournament in crushing fashion.
Amber Barton (19-19) took the defeat. FAU's record fell to 35-26 in the loss.
