Florida Atlantic University has defeated Florida International University once again, this time off the playing field. FAU donated more units of blood than FIU, winning the "Battle for the Bucket" blood drive, which the Community Blood Centers of South Florida hosted at FAU's Boca Raton campus on March 20 and 21 and at FIU on April 19 and 20.
"I am happy to announce that the kindness and generosity of our staff and athletes has led us to another victory over FIU," said Melissa Dawson, FAU's associate athletic director. "Thank you to everyone who participated in the blood drive. This is an honorable cause and just helps to re-emphasize FAU's commitment to the community and helping others in need."
FAU donated 89 usable units of blood during the two-day event, and FIU donated 57 units.
"It's always amazing to see so many new donors come out to an event like this," said Sandra Lester, director of the Community Blood Centers of South Florida in West Palm Beach. "We were very pleased with the turnout from FAU's athletics department during the two-day event in March."
The blood donated from FAU's blood drive will help to supply South Florida hospitals. FAU will receive a traveling trophy from the Community Blood Centers of South Florida to be awarded at a future FAU event.
