BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic softball team defeated Eastern Illinois 3-0 in its first game at the Miken Classic. Amber Barton pitched a three-hit shutout in the victory.
The Owls (12-10) scored in the top of the second inning when a Caitlyn Bliss sacrifice fly drove in Barton. A bad throw by the Towson right fielder allowed Lauren Crandall, who was originally on second to score. FAU added another run in the sixth on a Becky Brandies double that allowed Crandall to score for a second time. The complete game was Barton's ninth of the season.
FAU scored early in its second game of the night, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first against Towson on a Christine Houghtaling infield single that drove in Brandies. The Tigers tied the game in the second inning and took a 3-1 lead in the third when Mindy Bean tripled to drive in two runs. FAU pulled within one in the fifth when Amy Bukovich beat a throw home on an Ashlyn Parmerter grounder. Parmerter scored to tie the game in the sixth on a Brittany Walker base hit to right. Walker ended up at third on the play but could not be driven home. Becky Brandies led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple to right field. After a Houghtaling flyout to left, Lauren Crandall drove in Brandies on a groundout to the third baseman. The victory was Joan Joyce's 600th as head coach of Florida Atlantic University.
