BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic softball team fell to Kent State 6-5 in 10 innings on the final day of the Strike Out Cancer Tournament.
The Owls (4-5) committed seven errors in the game, but were able to stay in the game due to another great outing by Amber Barton. Barton struck out five and walked only one in eight innings. Both teams scored a run in the eighth inning, but neither could score in the ninth. FAU had a runner on third with one out in the 10th, but were unable to capitalize. In the bottom of the tenth, Kent State loaded the bases with none out. Blair Bodenmiller retired Amy Hair at home on the forceout, but Jessica Toocheck found a hole in the FAU defense for the game-winning hit.
In other Championship Sunday action, Miami (OH) defeated N.C. State 6-5 in the fifth place game and Missouri State defeated Long Island 3-2 in the title game MSU pitcher Lauren McGinley was named tournament MVP.
FAU will now travel to Palm Springs, CA to take part in the Palm Springs Classic. Play begins on Thursday, February 21 when they face Stanford at 8:30 pm. Live audio and live stats of the game via GameTracker will be available at fausports.com.
