Florida Atlantic University senior defensive lineman Michael Hancock one of just over the top half of players in the country nominated for the second annual Rudy Award. The award, named after former Notre Dame walk-on Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, honors student-athletes who demonstrate exemplary character, courage and commitment as a member of their college football team.
Hancock walked-on to FAU as a tight end in 2004. He moved to the defensive line as a junior and progressively worked his way up the depth chart as a non-scholarship player. By his senior year he earned a scholarship and also played his way into the starting lineup. This season he was one of the anchors of the defensive line, picking up 33 tackles, including six tackles for loss and a team leading four and a half sacks. Hancock also recovered a fumble in a game against ULM, returning it 34 yards in what was a key turnover in the Owls' victory. His efforts led FAU to a 6-6 record and a second-straight trip to a bowl as the Owls earned a trip to the Motor City Bowl in Detroit, Michigan.
The finalists for the Rudy Award will be announced on December 16 and then honored at a breakfast held in conjunction with the American Football Coaches Association Convention on January 12, 2009 in Nashville, Tennessee.
