DENTON, TX - The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team fell to top-seeded Denver University 4-2 in the semifinal round of the Sun Belt Conference Soccer Championships.
The loss ends the season for the tournament's fifth-seed Florida Atlantic (7-10-2), while regular season champs Denver (18-2-2) advance to Saturday's championship game.
Florida Atlantic enjoyed a terrific turnaround to its 2008 season losing just once in their last eight matches entering Thursday's semifinal matchup with the Pioneers.
Taryn Hemmings, the 2008 SBC "Player of the Year," scored two minutes into the match to set the tone for DU, who led 1-0 at halftime.
In the opening stages of the second half the Pioneers put two more goals on the board thanks to reserve Kelli Breidenbach. Leading 3-0 DU went up by four at the 65 minute mark to put the match out of reach.
Sophomore Laura Hyvonen netted a pair of unanswered goals at the 74 and 78 minute marks for FAU.
The Owls had defeated Middle Tennessee St. 2-1 in overtime in the No. 4 versus No. 5 game in the tournament's opening round on Wednesday
