The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team got a 21-point effort from Carla Stubbs and a hot shooting second half where they made 10 of 17 shots from the field in a 68-63 win over the UCF Knights on Saturday in Orlando.
Behind through the entire first half, the Owls got a big effort from Stubbs, who shot eight of 13 from the field and led FAU in rebounds with eight. The game turned with about four minutes left, when with the game tied at 59, Brittany Bowe dished the ball to a cutting Jaimie Givens for the lay-in to put FAU ahead. On the ensuing possession, Bowe lobbed it inside to Givens who got the lay-up over two defenders to put the Owls ahead to stay.
"I thought we just battled, I hadn't seen it all year and I finally saw it today," said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. "We've got a lot to work on but I finally saw some signs of life today."
Two other players broke into double-figures for the Owls (1-2). Bowe had 15 points on five-of-nine shooting from the field. Givens added 12 points. FAU sank 22 of 27 foul shots, 19 of those attempts coming in the second half and picked up 13 offensive rebounds.
UCF (1-2) was led by Chelsie Wiley who scored 18 points and was a perfect 10 of 10 from the foul line. Emma Cannon added a double-double, 15 points and 10 rebounds. However, she was limited in the second half as she committed her second foul with just over eight minutes to go in the game.
FAU returns to the FAU Arena on Tuesday night as they face Bethune-Cookman out of the MEAC conference at 7 p.m. For tickets and more information, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS. \
